In Need of A New Vehicle
In a recent blog titled, "We Need a New Vehicle," it addressess social issues that are affecting student learning. I responded to this blog because I have been exposed to schools where students come from "rough" family situations. I could easily see how they were being affected and exactly why they acted out the way they did. I agree Erin. I have similar situations in my own classroom. However, I think the reason they do need so much attention is because they do not receive any of it at home. It it easy to identify these students from lack of parent involvement in things such as; Open House, Parent-Teacher conferences, and classroom parties. It is sad to see the effects of it on the students. I have those particular students sitting in the front of the room, and their homework is monitored daily. I also provide morning time and recess time to help them catch up on concepts that are not reviewed at home.

I just read the blog and the responses. I work in the Pittsburgh Public Schoo District and face this everyday. The content from the article is just disheartening. However, I liked the response made in the blog as well as your response. School is one of the only outlets the students have. It hurts to see what is going on in their "real world." This is why I have always wanted to teach in the city. However, the curriculum now instilled in the entire district proves the feelings go with the first article by Alexander Russo. They'd rather ignore the issue instead of addressing the problems. However, I believe that leads to more problems. First of all, it may take the student's focus off topic as they are worried about parts of his/her home life. Another problem I have with that is that even if it is chose to be ignored, the problems and attitudes spill into the classroom. Therefore, I think there is still a lot of road that needs to be made up in certain districts.

It does seem to be true that the children that act out the most in school are the ones that have hard home lives. I wish that we had more time during the school day to help each student. I have a student who really has a poor home life. It affects her every day at school. Her attitude is negative and her general effort is poor. I just wish we could do more for her, but when she leaves the school we do not have a ton of control. It is sad!
I used to work for Head Start in their IT department. Every time I'd go to a classroom I'd have to hug all the children. I thought it was strange, but the teacher told me that most of those kids did not have a dad or good family life. I remembered my childhood and I was abandoned by my parents. I was just heart broken. It's a shame children have to deal with that. They don't deserve it.
